* 1 yard of outer fabric
* 1 yard of inner fabric
* 2 packages of bias tape (3 yards each, 6 yards total)
* thread
* iron
OK, let's get started!
Fold your yard of fabric to get a perfect square out of it. Trim the excess.
Perfect Square |
My square was 18.5" ... so I held the tape measure at the 18.5" point as I swung it around and cut a curve at 18.5" all around to make a circle.

all cut out! ready to unfold it |
Now place your cut out circle on your liner fabric.
Cut out liner the same size as the outer fabric!
Now you have 2 perfect circles.
On to the BUTTON HOLES! Trust me, I had never done one before, so I got out my sewing machine manual and learned. It wasn't as scary as I thought it would be. You need two button holes. One on each side. This is where you are going to insert your two drawstrings at the end. Each drawstring will have it's own button hole. More about that at the end.
There's no exact science to how big or small you should make your button hole. I decided on a button hole that was 1.5" long. Long enough to easily get the drawstring in. Measure 2" down from edge of circle. You need it far enough away from the edge to allow for seam allowances when you sew the two circles together and turn them right side out.

same thing on the left side |

see? one on each side. |
now pick your thread! |
Voila!
Now carefully use a seam ripper to open up button hole
all done! we survived. |
Pin before you sew!
I used a 1/2" seam allowance.
Sew almost all the way around. Leave a gap of 3-4" so you can turn it right side out. Back stitch at start and end.
I do the next step to make my circle look a little more crisp and polished. CAREFULLY snip little lines all the way around the circle. DO NOT cut into the line you just sewed!!!
The fun part... turn it right side out!
Here we go! Beautiful.
Iron out the edges.
Iron and pin all the way around. Tuck in the area where you left it open for turning. Pin and just top stitch right over that to close it up.
Now it's time to top stitch. I LOVE doing this. It makes your projects look more polished and complete.
Begin top stitching. Use a tiny seam allowance.
all done! |
Aaaand stitch!
keep going! almost done |
Now grab your bias tape.
You'll want to sew down the entire length of the bias tape to "close it off."
like so |
all done |
Tie each drawstring together in a knot so the ends don't wind up back inside the casing!
Drop in Legos and HAVE FUN!
